Media praise for Owl's recordings have come from such sources as American Record Guide, Audio, EAR, Fanfare, High Fidelity, and Keyboard.

In order to gain exposure for these important recordings, over the years Owl has distributed thousands of free copies of its recordings to music libraries, radio stations, critics, and publications. These recordings have thus not only received impressive reviews in the print media, but they have also reached literally millions of listeners via radio airplay.

Owl Recording, Inc. was formed in 1974, and in 1976 Owl became the first nonspecialized tax-exempt record label in the United States. Since then it has received support from various sources, such as the National Endowment for the Arts.
